Art Gallery Opening: "Studies in Geometry"
Saturday, April 27 2019 • 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM
The Philomathean Art Gallery will be displaying the photography of Penn freshman and Philo Junior member Ernest Ng. Entitled "Studies in Geometry," the Gallery will be hosting an opening on April 27th at 4:00PM. Statement from the artist: "This exhibition of minimalist architecture photography, featuring photographs of architecture by Tadao Ando and Herzog & de Meuron, explores the relationship between the individuals and the built environment, focusing on the shapes and light created by architectural elements. In his “10 commandments of Good Design”, the German industrial designer Dieter Rams argued that “good design is as little design as possible”. As an admirer of Rams’ functionalist design language, I agree with Rams’ sentiment and have incorporated his principle in this photography collection by removing all visual elements which I deem to be extraneous from each individual photo. This collection of photography has also been influenced by the oeuvre of the 1950s street photographer Fan Ho. In his photographs, Ho isolated his subjects via lighting techniques such as chiaroscuro and utilizing architectural lines to draw the viewer’s gaze towards his subject. Similarly, I have attempted to use various types of lighting (eg. harsh lighting with strong shadows, diffused lighting, gradients, etc.) as compositional devices to emphasize the subject and the interplay of light within a scene." ~~ Founded in 1963 as the first student art gallery, the Philomathean Gallery is a regular home to both student and professional exhibits, performances, recitals, and more. All of our events are free and open to the public.
